2010 – 2011 Powwow Princess Kiona Anderson was born on Oct 13 1993 and is a member of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe. Kiona is descended from Grace (Hicks) Pocknett and Horace Pocknett. Kiona has been involved with her tribe since she was born. She has danced every year at her powwows with help of her mother Winona Pocknett and her grandmother Gerry Hicks. From a young age, Kiona had the privilege to sit down with her aunts who told her stories of how it was for them to grow up and how they would like to see the tribe grow. Kiona is very proud to be a Mashpee Wampanoag Native.
Kiona has always been involved with the tribe. She has attended culture nights, she has been a spokesperson in the Mashpee schools about our culture, and she has danced in parades. Since Kiona was named Princess at the 2010 Powwow, she has attended every powwow of the East Coast and plans on attending the Gathering of Nations. Kiona loves that other Tribes recognize our Tribe and gives them their respect as well. Kiona recently participated at a benefit dance in Hyannis, MA to raise money for after-school program. Kiona will continue this work throughout her term, including promoting fundraisers through tribal committees and she will continue to go to youth council and general body tribal meetings to be as one with her Tribe.
Kiona has been on the girls basketball team, baseball and cheerleading. This year she is a volunteer for Special Olympics, and she actively attends Indian Education classes. Kiona strongly believes that we should always respect each other, and will continue to work toward this goal.
Kiona is very honored to be the Mashpee Wampanoag Powwow Princess and would like to thank her Tribe for its love and support.
