- 2012-01-24 - Cromwell Testimony to Protect Ancestral Graves from Destruction
Chairman Cedric Cromwell has submitted testimony today at the Massachusetts State House hearing on S. 2053 to protect important historical sites including an Mashpee Wampanoag ancestral burial grounds. This is about protecting our ancestral graves from destruction and stopping an attempt to erode our sovereignty.
An effort is underway to permanently remove the Peace Haven site in Freetown, Massachusetts from any oversight and protection by the Massachusetts Historic Commission. We strongly oppose this shortsighted effort which would negatively impact our ability to protect sites that are historically, archeologically and spiritually important. Massachusetts has strong historic preservation laws and a history of consulting with us as a sovereign government. The proposed legislation to strip the Peace Haven site of all state protections must not be allowed to pass.
